Don’t blame others for your relapse. You can blame them for your pain, your trauma, and your abuse. But not your relapse. Sorry, but that one’s on you.
Eleanor Roosevelt said, “If you could kick the person in the pants who is responsible for most of your troubles, you wouldn’t be able to sit for a month.”
Cicero said it like this: “Man is his own worst enemy.”
And Paul wrote, “All have sinned and fallen short” (Romans 3:23).
There are a lot of things you can blame on others. But you will never get well until you recognize there are a few things no one else can do . . .
- Keep you sober
- Make you fall
- Define your worth
Don’t let anyone else live in your head. When you fall, own it. When you take a second look at an attractive person, blame it on your own lack of self-discipline instead of their lack of clothing. No one else can make you sober, nor can they take your sobriety away from you.
Recovery Step: Until you take ownership for your disease, you won’t take responsibility for your recovery.
