Growing up, I was required to study history – lots of it. Texas history. U.S. history. World history. Now, as I age, I often tell people, “I’m so old that when I was a child, they didn’t teach history; they only taught the future.”
History is important. But so is the future. There’s a reason your car’s windshield is so much larger than your rearview mirror. You can’t move forward by looking back. That doesn’t work when driving, running, walking, or shopping at Walmart. Keep your eyes on what is in front of you.
For those of you who think things are terrible, hopeless, and beyond repair, I give you a glimpse into the future.
“A people not yet created will praise the Lord” (Psalm 102:18).
Now here’s the cool part. Not only does God have a wonderful future in store; you can be part of it! An old Greek proverb says, “A society grows when old men plant trees whose shade they know they will never sit in.”
Recovery Step: Start planting trees.
