The Three Mile Island event took place 45 years ago today. On March 28, 1979, a pressure valve in the Unit 2 reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania failed to close, triggering the worst accident in the history of the U.S. nuclear power industry. Although the accident at Three Mile Island had minuscule health consequences, it had a widespread impact on the American nuclear power industry. Part of that was based on what happened; much was based on fear of what might have happened.
Two national leaders weigh in on the subject of fear. First, a leader from the last generation. Ronald Reagan said, “Don’t be afraid to see what you see.”
And from one of today’s great leaders (sense the sarcasm?), Taylor Swift: “I think fearless is having fears but jumping anyway.”
You need to understand the difference between real and rule. Fear is real, but it doesn’t have to rule. The Bible says, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be afraid or terrified because of them, for the Lord your God goes with you; he will never leave you nor forsake you” (Deuteronomy 31:6).
Recovery Step: Face your fears, then turn them over to God.
