I have driven to Mt. Evans in Colorado. It is the highest elevation of any highway in America. And along the road, there are countless road signs, warning of twisting roads, sudden drops, rock slides, and more.
Imagine that, instead of posting all of the signs, they had no signs, but built a massive hospital at the bottom of the mountain, instead. Rather than warn people to drive safely, they focused on treating people once they drove off the cliff.
In recovery, we have two choices. We can heed the warning signs or we can fall off the cliff. I’ve tried it both ways. I assure you, it’s much better to stay on the road and follow the signs.
“Go to meetings.” “Get off social media.” “Get therapy.” “Work the steps.” “Make calls.” The signs are all there. There is no reason to drive off the cliff.
Recovery Step: “Examine everything carefully; hold fast to that which is good; abstain from every form of evil” (1 Thessalonians 5:21-22). Follow the signs.
