The chance of drawing a royal flush is one in 649,740. That’s about the same odds as finding sexual sobriety on your own.
And the odds of drawing any straight flush are one in 72,192. That’s about the same odds as keeping sexual sobriety on your own.
And if you don’t know what a royal flush is, or a straight flush, I suggest you not play Poker. Actually, if you’re any kind of addict, just avoid Poker, anyway.
So why do people walk into casinos with hundreds (or thousands) of dollars, and lose it all in their quest to win big? It’s two things – they want the money and they want the thrill.
The Bible addresses this: “What does it profit a man to gain the whole world and forfeit his soul?” (Mark 8:36).
Sex addicts are thrill seekers. In fact, the dopamine hit is actually the most powerful in what Patrick Carnes calls the preoccupation phase of acting out. The greatest thrill is walking into the casino, ordering the drink, putting money on the horse, or going to the porn site. You might be available to play without fire without getting burned.
But don’t bet on it.
Recovery Step: Your best odds of making it include getting into a group, doing recovery work, seeing a therapist, and connecting with others. Otherwise, you have a better chance of drawing a royal flush.
