I was about seven years old when I decided I’d had enough of my father’s rules. I decided I could make it on my own, so I ran away from home. I got about two blocks away when I realized I was hungry, so I returned home. Did Dad notice my insurrection? I suspect that he did. Was I still his son? Apparently so, as no one had taken my seat at the dinner table.
Suppose someone had asked my father, “Mr. Denison, your son says he has no need of a father. Do you still consider him your son?” What do you think he would have said? He considered himself to be my father even when I didn’t consider myself to be his son. His commitment to me was greater than my commitment to him.
So is God’s. I can count on him to be in my corner no matter what I do.
And you can too!
“Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good” (Psalm 136:4).
Recovery Step: From time to time, you may want to run away from home. But know this – God will never run away from you.
