Saint Ambrose wrote, “Many a sin has sullied me in body and in soul because I did not restrain my thoughts nor guard my lips; nevertheless, it is to Thee, O God of majesty and love, that I turn in my extremity, for Thou are the fount of mercy; to Thee, as quickly as I may, I speed. For Thou alone canst heal me; I take refuge under Thy protection.”
Translation – you need God.
Let’s focus on the last part of Ambrose’s quote. “I take my refuge under Thy protection.”
The good news is that God actually wants you to seek refuge in him today. Let me suggest three steps to doing just that.
- Recognize your need.
- Accept God’s help.
- Surrender to him completely.
Recovery Step: Jesus said, “Whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it” (Matthew 16:25). Embrace two simple truths: (a) you need Jesus, (b) Jesus wants you.
