The Bible promises three things to every believer: “You were washed, sanctified, and justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ” (1 Corinthians 6:11).
Let’s talk about that middle one – sanctification.
The process of sanctification simply means to become more like Christ. There are several ways we might try this. Many of us practice “hammock sanctification.” We lay around waiting for God to make it happen. Others engage in “treadmill sanctification.” They think that if they go hard enough, they will eventually become more like Jesus.
God has a better way. Let’s call it “cooperative sanctification.” As we often say in recovery, “Without God, you can’t; without you, God won’t.” Cooperative sanctification means partnering with God to become more like Christ.
Why does this matter? Because the more we become like Jesus, the further we move into our recovery.
Recovery Step: Work on your sanctification, and God will work on your recovery.
