There was an old country church that had a picture of Jesus hanging on the wall behind the pulpit. Worshipers could see the picture above the pastor’s head when he preached on Sundays. But one week, the pastor was out of town, and the man who filled in was quite a bit taller than he was.
After church that day, a young girl who was in attendance with her parents was asked by her mom how she liked the sermon. “I didn’t like it today,” said the girl. “And why not?” asked her mother. The girl explained, “Because the whole time he preached, I couldn’t see Jesus.”
Over a period of 31 years, I was the senior pastor to three churches. At each one, I had a verse engraved on the pulpit, where I would see it before I began each message: “Sir, we would see Jesus” (John 12:21).
We want everyone to know recovery. But more than that, we want them to know Jesus. May everything we do in our ministry, and everything you do as well, point men and women to Jesus.
Recovery Step: Step out of the way so others can see Jesus.
