William Gladstone said, “Selfishness is the greatest curse of the human race.”
Consider yourself cursed.
I’d say addicts are selfish, but I’d be repeating myself. We are the definition of selfishness. I have a friend who has been sober for over 20 years. I observed as a newcomer to recovery asked him, “Why do you think people act out?”
His response, tempered with decades of wisdom and sobriety: “Because it brings pleasure.”
Donald Miller offered this remedy: “Ask God to forgive you of your self-addiction.”
Jesus was a pretty fair example of the kind of selflessness that wins the day. In Mark 15:2, we find these words: “Pilate asked him, ‘Are you the king of the Jews?’”
With one word, Jesus could have shut down the whole crucifixion process. All he had to say was “No.”
But Jesus was nothing if not selfless. So he passed on comfort one more time. He chose the cross instead. That same selfless mindset will go a long way in your recovery.
Recovery Step: Ask God to forgive you of your self-addiction.
