Someone recently gave me a copy of the Serenity Prayer for those of us who are getting a little older.
“God, grant me the senility to forget the people I never liked, the good fortune to run into the ones I do, and the eyesight to know the difference.”
The more popular version of the Serenity Prayer is attributed to Richard Niebuhr (1894-1962). Perhaps you’ve heard of it.
“God, grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference.”
My sponsor taught me, years ago, to pray the Serenity Prayer (along with the Third Step Prayer and Seventh Step Prayer) several times a day. I recommend it to all my clients and sponsees. Start with the Serenity Prayer, right now.Recovery Step: The prophet had his own version of the Serenity Prayer. He said, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you” (Isaiah 26:3). Pray the prayer right now.
