Social gatherings can be a major source of triggers and fantasy.
Stefanie Carnes, president of the International Institute for Trauma and Addiction Professionals, addresses the role of misguided social interactions for the person who struggles with unwanted sexual behaviors. She writes, “Some sex addicts engage in risky behaviors such as sending sexually provocative texts and photos out of a longing for connection.”
Carnes warns against seeking unhealthy connections in social gatherings. When you know you will be at an event with numerous attractive people who will be triggering, she advises that you “bookend.” Call an accountability person before and after the event.
The Bible addresses the danger of unhealthy social connections: “Do not be misled; bad company corrupts good character” (1 Corinthians 15:33).
Recovery Step: Avoid unnecessary social gatherings that are a threat to your sobriety. And when you must attend such events, learn to bookend each time.
