I recently came across a little verse in one of the least quoted books of the Bible. John, one of the early followers of Christ, was checking up on the development of new believers. Word came back to John. Notice his response to that report:
“It has given me great joy to find some of you walking in the truth” (2 John 4).
One word really jumps out at me – some. John found great joy in learning that some of Christ’s followers were still walking in the truth.
Here’s my take on that. Not everyone who begins the road of discipleship will stay on that road to the end. Some will, but not all. The same is true of recovery. Some, not all, will continue to walk the road of sobriety. And for John, that is worthy of celebration.
If you know the power of addiction, you get this. What’s amazing isn’t that some fall back into relapse, but that some do not.
Recovery Step: Praise God for those in your life who have not fallen back into their addiction.
