Jesus told a story about two debtors who each owed the same man some money. In today’s terms, one of them owed about $5,000, while the other owed $75,000. Both men had their debt forgiven. Jesus asked his audience this question: “Which one will love the lender more?” (Luke 7:42). The answer was, of course, the man who owed the most money.
This parable is a great analogy for recovery. The addict who has a past littered with broken promises, affairs, and years of betrayal can experience something others may not. When the sex addict experiences hope and freedom, he is more appreciative than others. The transformation is more radical, the change more profound.
When you have been raised from the ditch to the mountaintop, there is a greater appreciation for the mountaintop, which others cannot fully appreciate. So embrace your recovery. Celebrate your redemption. May the pain of your past, coupled with the promise of your future, spark a celebration in the present.
Recovery Step: Celebrate the radical nature of your freedom and transformation.
