Two philosophers went on a camping trip. Tucked away in their sleeping bags for the night, one of them asked the other, “When you look up, what do you see?”
His buddy said, “I see thousands of stars.”
“And what is the deeper meaning of that to you?”
“I think it means somebody stole our tent.”
Sometimes, we make things more complex than necessary. We look for deep meaning where the simple is the true message. That is especially true with recovery. I know guys who spend tens of thousands of dollars looking for the deep meaning behind their addictions, while ignoring the simple steps demanded by rigorous recovery.
Don’t misunderstand. I’m all for therapy. We all should be in therapy at some point. But don’t ever let that which you don’t understand keep you from doing what you know.
Recovery Step: Solomon said, “The hand of the diligent makes rich” (Proverbs 10:4). Ben Franklin added, “Diligence is the mother of good luck.” The message? Don’t wait until you understand everything in order to do something.
