Life can be heavy. This is especially true in addiction recovery. The road to freedom is often marked with challenges and set-backs. That leads me to a very important ingredient of successful recovery.
Humor.
Educator Frank Moore Colby noted, “Men will confess to treason, murder, arson, false teeth, or a wig. But how many of them will own up to a lack of humor?”
Writer Joss Whedon adds, “Humor keeps us alive. Humor and food. Don’t forget food. But you can’t go a week without laughing.”
God is the author of humor. Laughter is a healthy thing, a companion you will do well to keep close as you tread the road to recovery.
Dr. Hara Marano explains the benefits of an active sense of humor. “Laughter reduces pain, increases job performance, connects people emotionally, and improves the flow of oxygen to the heart and brain.”
Recovery Step: The Bible says, “Laughter is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22). That is a pill you need to take if you hope to get well.
