“I appointed two large thanksgiving choirs” (Nehemiah 12:31).
Nehemiah was the great wall builder of the Old Testament. He prayerfully led God’s people to rebuild the wall around the city of Jerusalem. He stepped in during a time of great danger, despondency, and discouragement. But in addition to the wall, Nehemiah built something else.
Thanksgiving choirs.
He appointed two great thanksgiving choirs, made up of Levites having both musical skills and grateful souls. They were appointed to “praise and give thanks, group alternating with group” (Nehemiah 12:24). Positioned on opposite walls, the choirs burst into praise and thanksgiving at the appointed moments, “so that the joy of Jerusalem was heard afar off” (12:43).
There is power in praise. Let me challenge you to do something right now, out of Nehemiah’s playbook. Take a moment to sing. Any old hymn or new praise song will work.
Recovery Step: Sing praises to the Lord.
