Colton Harris Moore was born on March 21, 1991, in the sleepy town of Mount Vernon, Washington. Colton was bored. So one day, at the age of 17, he decided to become the Barefoot Bandit.
Removing his shoes, Colton broke into hunting and fishing cabins near his home. This escalated to stealing cars and trucks, again wearing no shoes. And then Colton stole an airplane.
Yes, an airplane. He stole a series of cars, from Washington to Indiana, in the summer of 2010, at the age of 19. There, he stole a Cessna 400 single engine plane and flew it to The Bahamas for a little R&R. Colton emerged from the aircraft barefoot – and under arrest.
The Barefoot Bandit served six years in prison, was released in 2016, and his whereabouts are now unknown.
So the next time you board a commercial airline and your pilot is barefoot, you might want to get back off the plane.
Recovery Step: Colton’s problem started with boredom. Boredom is a problem – whether you are wearing shoes or not. It is critical that we cast our cares on the one who cares for us (1 Peter 5:7).
