“Although they knew God, they did not glorify him as God, nor were thankful, but became futile in their hearts, and their foolish hearts were darkened” (Romans 1:21).
The darkened heart is like a basement at the bottom of the stairs. While my childhood home didn’t have a basement, our relatives’ home in Kansas did. Every summer, we went there on vacation. When the lights were off, each descending step into the basement was scarier than the one before.
Relapse is like that – a descension into a dark place. The first step is pride that says relapse can’t happen. The second step into the basement is a missed meeting. Then comes missed prayer times, lustful thoughts, emotional relapse, mental relapse, and then it’s over.
You have hit bottom. You find yourself in a dark basement of hopelessness. There is only one way out. You must find the light switch. Only when you turn on the light can you find your way out.
Recovery Step: Flip on the light switch by going to a meeting, calling your sponsor, or getting alone with God.
