In his book, The World, The Flesh, and Father Smith, Bruce Marshall wrote, “The young man who rings the bell at the brothel is unconsciously looking for God.”
Billy Graham said it like this: “There is a God-shaped emptiness in all our hearts that only God can fill.”
The answer for the sex addict is not to look for a better brothel. The answer is to look for a better God. The psalmist wrote, “Delight yourself in the Lord, and he will give you the desires of your heart” (Psalm 37:3).
So how do we seek this unseen God? I offer three suggestions. Give God three things:
- The first part of every week: church on Sunday
- The first part of every day: devotional time each morning
- The first part of every dollar: your tithe
The fact is, no matter how much time or expense you are consuming with the next “hit,” porn, prostitute, or masturbation, you are really seeking God.
Recovery Step: Take your unconscious search for God up a notch. Make it a conscious search.
