On this date in 1894, Coca-Cola was bottled and sold for the first time, in Vicksburg, Mississippi, by local fountain owner Joseph Bieden. Today, 1.9 billion servings of Coca-Cola will be served in over 200 countries. Annual revenues total $38 billion. Since its first offering, several new renditions of Coke have been introduced: Diet Coke (1982), New Coke (1985), Coke Classic (1985), Cherry Coke (1985), and Coke Zero (2005).
I’m not a Coke drinker, but I appreciate its enduring presence. There is something satisfying about knowing that Coke isn’t going anywhere, 129 years after its inception.
We have a God like that. Actually, he has been around a lot longer than 129 years, and he can quench a thirst that Coke can’t touch. God can quench the thirst of our souls.
David said it like this: “God is our refuge and strength, always ready to help in times of trouble” (Psalm 46:1).
Recovery Step: Trust in the One who can forgive your faults, save your soul, destroy your demons, and hold your hand.
