2 Samuel 9:13: “Mephibosheth always ate at the king’s table, but he was lame in both feet.”
Mephibosheth was a son of Jonathan, which made him a grandson of King Saul, who had treated David like dirt. But when David became king, he made good on an old promise. He welcomed Saul’s descendant to the king’s table. Mephibosheth was an unlikely dinner guest.
He was a cripple who was never healed. He had to limp if he was to make his way to the king’s table. But limp he did.
Mephibosheth’s injuries were not of his own doing. An attendant had dropped him while he was a baby. The result was a handicap that followed him for life.
Addiction is the result of unwanted trauma, abuse, and isolation. Someone probably dropped you when you were young – emotionally or even sexually. To this day, you walk with a limp.
The answer is to keep walking, limp and all . . . all the way to the table of the king.
Recovery Step: Wear your limp as a badge of honor. Never stop walking. Keep limping all the way to the King’s table.
