Can you ever quit doing recovery work? What if you have ten years of sobriety? Or twenty?
I love the way Dr. Milton Magness says it: “You might outgrow addiction, but you’ll never outgrow recovery.”
Let me use an analogy. Imagine that you are climbing a 14,000-foot mountain. The more you climb and the higher you go, the better you become at mountain climbing. But (and this is a big “but”) you must work just as hard on the last ten feet of the climb as you did on the first ten feet of the climb.
Starting the journey is critical. But finishing is epic. God is all about strong finishes. The Bible reminds us, “He who began a good work in you will complete it” (Philippians 1:6).
To you who are new to recovery, welcome to the journey! To you who have been at this for a while, press on. Keep going. Never stop. The rest of your journey will be the best of your journey.
Recovery Step: Keep climbing.
