A father asked his young son to go out to the barn to get his tool chest. The boy was afraid of the dark and protested, “But it’s dark outside!” The dad handed the boy a lantern and said, “Hold up the lantern. How far can you see?” “I can see to the mulberry tree,” his son replied. “Well, then, go to the tree. Now how far can you see?” “To the gate.” “Then go to the gate. Now how far?” “To the barn door!”
That’s how recovery works. Don’t try to achieve a year of recovery. Just get to the mulberry tree.
I’m a fan of collecting chips that mark days, months, and years of sobriety. But the chip that matters most is the 24-hour chip. It represents a commitment to 24 hours of sobriety. That is how we win the war – one day at a time.
Jesus said, “Walk while you have light” (John 12:35). You will find that for every next step, God provides just enough light to get you there.
Recovery Step: Walk to the mulberry tree.
