Relapse is a process, not an event.
Thomas Kempis said, “Sin is first a simple suggestion, then a strong imagination, then delight, then assent.”
The man who grew up with Jesus said, “Each one of us is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death” (James 1:15-16).
Let’s return to the process of sin:
- Suggestion
- Imagination
- Delight
- Assent
The answer? Cut it off when it is still just a suggestion.
Recovery Step: Walk away from your temptation before it walks all over you.
