Paul Williams said, “You know you’re an alcoholic when you misplace things for like a decade.”
Sadly, it often takes years – or decades – for us to seek the help we really need. I have been to over 700 recovery meetings, and I have yet to meet the man who said, “The day I first realized I had a problem is my sobriety date.”
The problem? Procrastination.
Henry Wheeler Shaw was right: “The greatest thief this world has ever produced is procrastination.” And these words are attributed to St. Augustine: “God has promised forgiveness to your repentance, but he has not promised tomorrow to your procrastination.”
Translation: you need to get help now!
Recovery Step: King David prayed, “Show me your ways, Lord; teach me your paths” (Psalm 25:4). That should be the prayer of each of us. But what comes next matters as much as the prayer. When we see the path to recovery, we must take it – without delay.
