A.W. Tozer wrote with his typical brilliance, in The Pursuit of God. “Has it ever occurred to you that one hundred pianos all tuned to the same fork are automatically tuned to each other? They are of one accord by being tuned, not to each other, but to another standard to which each one must individually bow.”
The best way for us to get right with each other is for us to first get right with God.
Jesus’ closest disciple said it like this: “If we walk in the light as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin” (1 John 1:7).
A really good reason to draw near to God is so we can draw near to each other. John Piper lists three reasons we need each other: (a) mutual bond, (b) mutual faith, and (c) mutual protection.
Recovery Step: Let me stretch Tozer’s analogy. You need all the instruments of the band in order to be complete. But the first order of business is to get your own instrument in tune.
