Too many of us get too offended by too many people too much of the time. And that’s a problem, because when we are offended, we become stuck in our recovery.
Living in “offended” mode is indicative of a lack of forgiveness, and when you don’t forgive someone, you are letting those who hurt you define you. That is never a good idea.
Brant Hensen wrote a great book on the subject, titled Unoffendable. He asserts that Christ-followers “should be the most refreshingly unoffendable people on the planet.”
Solomon weighs in: “It is to one’s glory to overlook an offense” (Proverbs 19:11).
Sometimes, being offended can’t be helped. But staying offended is a choice. I agree with R.T. Kendall: “The primary way we grieve the Holy Spirit is by fostering bitterness in our hearts.”
Recovery Step: The next time someone does something offensive, choose forgiveness over bitterness. Be the most refreshingly unoffendable person you can be.
