“As a result of this many of his disciples withdrew, and were not walking with him anymore” (John 6:66).
That is one of the saddest verses in the Bible. Men who qualified as “disciples” of our Lord walked away from their commitments and faith.
Unfortunately, I see it all the time. I have been in the same 12-Step group for nine years. We usually have about 20 guys in the group, which is great. But if everyone came who has been in the group over the last nine years, we’d have closer to 100.
Relapse is far too common. The question is, which comes first? Do people relapse because they drop out of groups, or do they drop out of groups because they have relapsed?
Probably both.
Man’s greatest addiction is selfishness. As long as there is selfishness, there will be relapse. Too many will fall away. But the good news is that “too many” does not have to include you.
Recovery Step: Never lose focus. What has happened to so many others can happen to you.
