Willpower won’t work.
Dr. Dean Drosnes explains: “Why is surrender, not willpower, the key to recovery? The answer lies in brain science. Prolonged [instances of addictive behavior] damage the prefrontal cortex, which is involved in problem-solving, self-awareness, and controlled behavior. Addiction damages the very part of the brain that could enable the addict to stop.”
If you have been frustrated by numerous failed attempts at sobriety, take heart. The answer is to recognize your Source. Perhaps you’ve heard this little verse before: “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13).
Recovery Step: Author Wilbur Howard wrote, “The future belongs to those who set their sights on what is humanly unattainable.” That includes recovery. You can do this. Actually, you can’t. But God can.
