On this date in 1965, the Beatles’ hit song, Yesterday, reached #1 on the charts, a position it held for the next four weeks. Yesterday would be voted the best song of the 20th century in a 1999 poll of musical experts across the globe.
Written by Paul McCartney, Yesterday was a ballad written about the break-up of a relationship. The singer nostalgically laments for yesterday, when he and his love were together before she left him because of something he said.
Here’s the telling line from the song:
“Why she had to go
I don’t know, she wouldn’t say.
I said something wrong,
Now I long for yesterday.”
The lesson from this iconic song? Words matter.
Solomon agreed: “Death and life are in the power of the tongue” (Proverbs 18:21).
Recovery Step: The words you say will impact your sobriety, your relationships, and your entire future. So choose them carefully.
