“But you, when you pray, go into your inner room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in secret” (Matthew 6:6).
When you watch a championship football team, you might say, “Boy, they won that game today!” But they didn’t. They won the game in the days leading up to kick-off, through endless hours of training, practice, and discipline. It’s what they did that nobody saw that made champions out of them.
The same is true with us. The faith to live a life of victory comes day by day, week by week, year by year, in the secret places where we learn to trust and obey. It is in the unseen places that we seek God that he empowers us. That is where we learn to trust and obey, so that we can be victorious in the public arena.
The ability to trust – and to obey – is learned and refined when no one is around, when no one notices.
And when no one applauds.
Recovery Step: Do the work that no one sees so that you can be the person everyone respects.
